BFSR 2012 Pictures!

Battle for Stones River 2012: Thoughts from the Tournament Organizer.

            So the 2012 BFSR has come and gone, what a day it was though.  I feel like it was quite a successful tournament.  We had 67 players total, a new venue, some new terrain and some new tables.  I have quite a few pictures to post but I wanted to give you guys my take on the tournament.
            To start with, I want to thank everyone involved in the tournament from prepping terrain/tables to setup/cleanup.  My fellow Istvaanians; Danny, Josh, Phillip, Keith, Patrick and Shannon thanks for all the help!  Thanks goes out to Chris from Grand Adventures for all of his support.  Thanks to Matt for providing everyone lunch.  Also, thanks to Todd for helping with odds and ends.  Finally, a giant thanks to all the players for making the day great!  I think we had a great bunch of players and some awesome looking armies.

Battle for Stones River 2012 Results are in!

I know everyone has been waiting patiently for the results to be posted, but I do want to take a minute and say a few things...

BIG THANKS goes out to my fellow Istvaanians for all their hard work leading up to and the day of.  Without their help we would not have had such a great event.  Thanks to all the participants that showed up with great attitudes and made our day that much more enjoyable.  Also thanks to Chris with Grand Adventures for his support and to Matt Rogers with the Wright Agency for providing an awesome lunch!  Also a big thanks to Black Library author Mike Lee for taking time out of his busy schedule to stop in and chat.  I hope some of you guys took advantage and picked his brain a little.

I will be posting my thoughts on the event and hundreds of pictures over the next day or two.  It will take me awhile to comb through the pictures and get them ready for the blog post.  I really hope everyone enjoyed themselves and I am already looking forward to next year!  So less reading and more results posting...

Battle for Stones River 2012 Scenarios!

Alright, as promised and as in the past, we are releasing six different scenarios of which four will be used at the tournament.  We want people to be able to run through the scenarios once or twice, so if there is something you don't understand or doesn't make sense let us know.  So no more waiting, on to the scenarios...

More Tournament Terrain Building

Have you ever tried to get things ready for a 50 man tournament? Well, make that 70 players and you know what guys here at the Istvaanians are going through! This year, the Battle for Stones River tournament is going to be on the Games Workshop GT circuit. In addition to that we've decided to move the event to a larger venue and add 20 more players! Last year all 50 spots were filled in just over a month!

In order to support these extra 20 players, that means we have to build and furnish ten more tables complete with terrain. That's 60 square feet of new terrain that has to be built! In Boltergeist's earlier post here, you saw all of the hills that he cut out that still have to be flocked and painted. What you didn't see were all the ruined wall sections that were also built to go with them. But even with all that, there's still more to do! We got about $500 worth of Cities of Death Terrain to build, base, flock, and paint!

5 Imperial Sectors and 2 Basilica Administratums equals one big city of death!

I took on that task and over the last week I managed to get all of the main sections of the building built and glued to the bases. I started out by clipping all the pieces off of the sprues and sorting them into the five big Cities of Death boxes. I made one box for the floors, one for the accessories, and one each for the building pieces except the Basilica Administratum pieces. Since our ten new tables are going to be desert themed, we decided to use as much of the Adeptus Mechanicus pieces as we could for those tables. After clipping and sorting all the parts, I cleared my living room floor and began to lay out the pieces for all of the buildings. Each of the buildings are made from eleven individual pieces from the different Cities of Death kits.

One of the Imperial Sector boxes full of nothing but floor sections.

Once everything was sorted and place into bags, I used a power sander to quickly remove any of the flash and mold lines from the pieces. From there it was just a matter of sitting down with my bag of parts and assembling all 22 of the buildings. With all the pieces prepped and sorted it really didn't take long to get all of them built. In fact I could have done them all in one day if I wanted. The buildings were then each glued to one square foot pieces of hard board and left to dry overnight.

Waiting for the glue to dry on 22 square feet of Cities of Death terrain. All laid out on my living room floor!

And that brings us to where I'm at now. I still need to make a ruined corner section to go on the opposite side of each piece of hard board to give the illusion of an entire ruined building. Then all that's left to do is add some sand to the bases, prime, and paint!

This still isn't all of it though. There are enough pieces left to make another ten or so buildings. And I've also cut up close to 100 feet of 1/2 inch PVC pipe into 6 inch pieces to make more terrain with. All of it still has to be glued, primed, and painted as well.

And to copy Boltergeist's previous post, here is all the information for this years Battle for Stones River!

Next time you go to a tournament, take a moment to thank the tournament organizers and store owners for all their hard work. BFSR terraforming underway!

Hey all, I've been hard at work putting together additional terrain for our upcoming Battle for Stones River 2012. We listened to the constructive feedback from last year and are adding in extra line-of-sight blocking terrain to every table for your strategic convenience. We will end up with ruined walls, multi-level hills, and ruined buildings all constructed with balance and consistency in mind, so all table sides will be fair.

Comin' ta getcha!

    Battle for Supremacy Doubles Tournament

    What a crazy weekend of gaming!  We had our local doubles tournament this weekend, the Battle for Supremacy.  It was a pretty good turnout with 23 teams showing up from all over Tennessee.  We had three great rounds of play with little to no trouble from players or scenarios!  Always a good sign.  Big THANKS goes out to my fellow bloggers Asmodai and AirmanG for helping run this year's event.

    A little history on this event, it has been run in the past by another local gaming club, the Laughing Corpse.  After last year's event they decided not to continue running the event and after much confusion ended up turning the reigns over to Dicehead Games out of Chattanooga.  Luckily Shane from Dicehead was willing to let our FLGS, Grand Adventures, in on the tournament and so the Istvaanians were once again called into action.  So after many setbacks, the big one was our venue being yanked out from under us a month prior to the tournament, we set up 13 tables inside Grand Adventures and got ready for the action.

    The scenarios are based around all the battles taking place on a Demon World solely for the entertainment of the Demon itself.  I have had the idea for a while and wanted to go into greater detail, but for lack of time I used a much watered down version of my original.  So here is the three scenarios we used for the tournament.

    Battle for Avignor Week Three

    Battles raged across the continent this week.  Avignor is hell come reality for the soldiers fighting on it.  The forces arrayed against the Imperials have had huge successes this week with five victories, turning them into five new territories.  The Imperials on the other hand had three victories, only able to capitalize on two of them.  There were five battles that ended in neither side gaining any advantage.  The Imperials are currently holding 41 territories and the forces of the Enemy are up to 50.

    Here is the new map after the second week...

    The battle lines are starting to becoming blurred, armies are beginning to become isolated and cutoff.  Hopefully the Imperials can pick up the pace this week and gain some territories back.  I hope this inspires you to run a campaign with your local group.  Thanks for reading.

    Inspired from Vacation1

    St. George Island, Florida - We took a 5 mile hike out to the end, in the rain!

    Last week my wife and I took a much needed vacation (or holiday for you folks across the pond!) to celebrate our ten year wedding anniversary. It's hard to believe that I have been married to such a wonderful woman for ten years! During our trip to the beach, I managed to get very little done in the way of Warhammer. I finished reading one of the Black Library's 40K books, Fear the Alien. It's a book full of great short stories based around humans and aliens, and has a few tie-ins with other 40K book series. I highly recommend this book to anyone, especially if you are wanting to start a Xenos army! I also picked up a copy of the Warhammer Fantasy Ogre Kingdoms Armybook, and almost finished it as well. I'm still not sure if I will start an army of these guys, but the new models are very tempting!

    The biggest thing I took away from my vacation (well, Warhammer related!), was a renewed interest in the hobby side of Warhammer. Looking at the sand dunes and other natural areas that we visisted, I was re-inspired to create a Warhammer Fantasy army based around the collectors edition Sartosa figures. I know I still have way too many other projects going one, but really, when is anyone ever truly finished with an army! I was thinking that a small 1500 point army would be easy to build and assemble.

    One more army won't hurt anyone!

    As you might have guessed, I've been interested in getting back into Fantasy lately. I need to get a few things going on my Night Goblins and head out to my FLGS (Friendly Local Gaming Store), Grand Adventures on Sundays and get a better feel for the game before starting my Sartosa based army.

    Before I left for vacation, I got the OK from the Imperial Budget Commander to order a Battle Foam case for my Orks. Last time I took the to the FLGS, my Orks spilled out from their make-shift case into the floor board of my truck! Luckily nothing was broken this time, and afterwards I decided that I needed to make the investment in a good case. My FLGS had two P.A.C.K. 720's in stock, so I grabbed those and ordered the foam to go in them, which should be arriving this week. So until then, I'll be playing my Deathwing.

    And to top it all off, I've got a tournament at the FLGS this weekend to help AirmanG run, and a much, much larger one, the Battle for Supremacy on December 3rd. Keep an eye out for more details from Bossman on this event! And, there is still the local map campaign that Bossman is running at the FLGS as well.

    Sorry for all the rambling, but I think this vacation has done a lot to inspire me with my hobbies! Sometimes it really is good to get away and take a new look at things. It's gonna be a busy end to a great year!

    Battle For Avignor Week Two

    The Battle rages on!  We had a great first week of our campaign.  There were 15 games played this week with the bad guys picking up 8 victories and the good guys only 5.  We also had 2 draws this week.  In our movement phase, our commanders battled it out trying to take territory after territory.  In the end only 6 territories changed hands.

    The Bad guys pushed forward on the flanks, capturing one territory to each side.  They also made a push into the town of Tanglewood, capturing the town itself and territory around it.  The good guys concentrated on the Promethium fields, pushing down into the ruins capturing two territories.

    The world of Avignor after the first week of fighting...

    Here are the rules we used for capturing territories:
    Rules for conquering territories
    Basic map tile= 5 on 2d6
    Modifiers to conquer rolls:
                Mountains= +2
                Rivers=+1
                Ruins=+1
                Forests=+1
                Cities=+2
                Barracks=+2/+1 surrounding tiles
                Shield Generator=+3/+1 surrounding tiles
                St. Avignor’s Cathedral=+3

    Commanders may use one win to roll to conquer a territory.  They may also use up to three wins to alter their conquer rolls.
    Commanders may use one win to roll in defense of a territory.  They may also use up to two wins to alter their defense roll.  (Players must declare to defend a territory before the attacker rolls, but doesn’t have to if the attack fails.)
    Players must declare their use of wins to alter rolls before the roll is made.

    Battle for Avignor Map Unveiled!

    So I have completed my first map using Campaign Cartographer 3!  I really like this program and it can do all kinds of awesome things, problem is I don't know how to use 3/4 of it.  It is a very steep learning curve and it will take me a long time to master it.  I think my maps will look better and better each time.

    So anyway, our campaign for Avignor is just a day away (October 6th) and I thought I should post the map for all to see.  If anyone has any feedback or suggestions about CC3, please let me know.

    Should be a great campaign, so if your in the area of Middle Tennessee stop by Grand Adventures over the next five weeks and get some games in!

    New in-store map campaign!

    The Crusade for Avignor
    (An Istvaanian Map Campaign)
    Introduction:
                Welcome to Avignor of the Helican Subsector.  The world was originally reclaimed by St. Avignor during the early expansions by the Emperor.  The populace welcomed the Imperium with open arms becoming very devote followers of Imperial Creed.  They followed the Ecclesiarch’s teachings and worshipped the Emperor as God of mankind for generations.  St. Avignor was also worshipped on the planet bearing his namesake; so much so that when he died a large cathedral was built in his honor and became his final resting place.  After many miracles performed in his lifetime across the sector, St. Avignor’s Cathedral became a pilgrimage for millions of Imperial citizens.
    A world once dominated by the Ecclesiarch, it was cut off from the Imperium by a huge warp storm that hid the planet in limbo between real space and the warp.  After generations of isolation, slowly the majority of the population began to fall from their belief in the God-Emperor.  This shift did not go unnoticed and the foul stench of Chaos infiltrated the influential upper class.  Soon those that still followed the Ecclesiarch became the minority as more and more of the population denounced the Emperor, believing the he had abandoned them.  The Cathedral of St. Avignor became the stronghold for a resistance.  Known as the Followers of the Light, this resistance group kept the Emperor’s teachings alive for many generations.
    Many dark and strange happenings took place during this time in limbo.  Somehow groups of sadistic aliens could travel to and from the planet at will, raiding on what seemed like a clockwork schedule.  During these raids the aliens would take mass amounts of prisoners and disappear as quickly as they came.  Other darker, scarier things would visit too… Demons of all kinds would shift in and out of the warp as the storm waxed and waned around the planet.
    Now as the storms subside, a call goes out.  The Followers of the Light, descendants of the original Ecclesiarch, have put out psychic messages.  These messages are a cry for help, for as the planet reemerges from the shadow of the warp, the denizens that used it as a playground do not want to give it up.  The majority of the populace is held in sway by tainted leaders who spew forth anti-imperial rhetoric.  The race is on for the soul of Avignor.  Can Imperial forces assail the planet and with help from the resistance, reclaim what was once a model Imperial world?

    Avignor:
                The planet itself presents as an Oceanic planet with one large super continent containing its entire population.  The planet is largely agricultural but has large stores of promethium under the oceans.  The stores of promethium were the largest export from the planet before the storms came.  The continent’s main mountain range contains the Cathedral of St. Avignor.  Rumors abound that St. Avignor was buried with a very powerful artifact that he used during the wars of reclamation.  Those that protect the Cathedral have neither confirmed nor denied its existence, but since the storms St. Avignor’s tomb has remained sealed from visitors.

    Campaign Details:
                This campaign will be run at Grand Adventures Comics.  The games will be reported to the Campaign Coordinator via results sheets.  This campaign is open to anyone wishing to take part.
    • ·         Duration: Five Weeks beginning October 6, 2011.
    • ·         Entry fee: $5.00 to be paid to the shop.
    • ·         Points limits: None
    • ·         Maximum games per week: None
    • ·         Special Scenarios: Yes, but not mandatory each week.
    • ·         Map Campaign with two opposing forces

    Players will sign up at Grand adventures, claiming their loyalties to one of two banners.  Either the forces of Evil/Chaos/Aliens, lead by Kevin Drury or the forces of the Imperium and its allies, lead by Damon Booker.  These Supreme Overlord Commanders will be in charge of making the movements each Thursday night.  Each win that players get throughout the week boosts the number of territories your SOC can attempt to conquer.  These wins can also bolster defenses or be stacked to increase the chances of conquering.  The campaign maps will be posted on the Grand Adventures Forum, the Blade and Bolter Forum and the Istvaanian Blog Site.  A hard copy of the map will also be available at the shop.  You are encouraged to speak with your SOC and strategize about map movements.
    Actual game play… Players may play any day of the week against anyone on the opposing force.  Players may play as many games as they wish but may only play the same person twice in one week.  The gaming week runs from Thursday to the following Wednesday.  Players may play any scenario that they wish but each week a special scenario will be available that will give your side bonuses for the win.  Also scenarios from Cities of Death will give bonuses to attempts at conquering territory with cities on them.  Planet Strike scenarios will give your SOC the opportunity to conquer territories away from the frontlines.  Result sheets will be available in the shop and must be turned in to receive credit for the game.  Both players must sign off on the result sheet for it to be valid.

    The point behind the campaign:
                The whole point is to have fun, to put a story behind your games and give them some purpose.  This is by no means a competitive setting.  We do have prizes to give out in the end but not to the player with the most wins!  Records are kept but will be posted in a side vs. side fashion instead of individuals.  Keep in mind the reason we all started playing in the first place, to have fun!  Good luck.

    Cities of Death Tournament & League: Results and Photos

    Well, we didn't have as big of a turn out as we hoped for, but we still had a great event at Grand Adventures this past weekend! I was there to help out AirmanG and run a ringer army if needed. And we needed one! We had hoped for around 15 - 20 people, but only 5 showed up. Since the tables were already set up, we decided to go ahead and throw down! After the first round, AirmanG and I made the decision to start moving terrain from the tables we just played on to the next row of tables. This allowed us to make the table match the Alpha, Gamma, Omega style missions that Bossman had wrote for us and gave the tourney a more fluid feel. No one played on the same table twice. By the third round, I had to pick a deployment zone based on whether or not I could fit my Land Raider on the table! In the end, the 7 of us had a great time and between the tourney and the league winners, $130 in prize support was given away!!! Here are the results in order:

    • Tourney 1st Place ($30) Kevin D. with Dark Eldar
    • Tourney 2nd Place ($20) League 1st Place ($50) Patrick G. with Iron Hands Space Marines
    • Danny C. with Deathwing Dark Angels Space Marines
    • Brendan with Dark Eldar
    • David D. with Salamanders Space Marines
    • Ben B. with Grey Knights Space Marines
    • Note: League 2nd Place ($30) Damon B. with Grey Knights
    First Place Tourney Trophy with One of the Winners Venom Squads

    First Place League Trophy with One of the Winners Iron Hands Squads

    And here are ton of photos taken by David. Check out the terrain! Thanks for the photos, David!

    New League: Cities of Death

    Come one, come all! It is time for Grand Adventures Cities of Death League.

    League starts Thursday June 30.
    Game days are every Thursday and Saturday.
    The league will run for five weeks ending on Thursday August 4.
    Saturday August 6 there will be a Cities of Death Tournament open to anyone with the courage to fight. Details on the tournament later.

    How's it work? You come in and play... No, really the league will be a $5 entry fee unless you need to pick up the Cities of Death book from Grand Adventures. If you order or purchase it the first week then the league is free! You can play up to three league games a week. These can be against anyone else playing in the league. You will earn points for wins/losses/draws. These will be posted each week in the store.

    If you are not familiar with Cities of Death, check out this month's White Dwarf. It has an update that brings the Cities of Death in line with the latest version of the rule set. In Cities of Death your army will work vastly different than ever before... mechanized armies will find the job difficult. This is where the foot infantry shine. Games will take longer than usual do to heavy amounts of terrain. For this reason we are capping the points limit at 1750 points for league games. (Also an opportune time to break out that new army you've been squirreling away!)

    Each week during your games, you may experience some special objectives and stratagems appearing in your game. These can have wonderful effects for your army or if you allow your opponent to capture them, ill effects. You'll have the opportunity for some of your units to write their own little piece of history!

    So come on in to Grand Adventures and get in on some good old fashion, city destroying face smashing! Don't forget to pick up your copy of Cities of Death!

    Battle for Stones River 2011 Wrap Up and Announcement!

    From Bossman

    First I would like to thank everyone that took part in the Battle for Stones River this year. I feel that it was the most successful tournament so far. We had a wonderful day of war gaming with 208 games of 40K played inside 10 hours with no major problems. We owe this to you, the players. There are a few others that are responsible for this being a great tournament, of course, Chris with Grand Adventures and my partners in terrain Danny, Josh and Keith. Thanks goes to Travis and Ken for being our rules judges. Also I wanted to thank Scott with the Hammercast and Black Library author Mike Lee for coming and spending their Saturday with us. Finally I would like to thank Matt Rogers and his boss Travis with All State Insurance for providing our lunch for the day.

    So the whole reason behind the tournament is to provide a high quality large scale tournament for our local community. Out of simple enjoyment do I continue to run the tournaments and attempt every year to build upon what we did the previous year. So in an endeavor to make thing grow I am happy to announce that the Battle for Stones River 2012 will be part of the Games Workshop North American Independent Grand Tournament Circuit. What does this mean? Well it means that the top two overall players will receive a ticket to the Throne of Skulls tournament which will be in Memphis,TN. in October 2012. Games Workshop will be advertising this tournament via a wide variety of means, so we are going to attempt to find a suitable location that we can expand our tournament to more than 50 people. The core of the tournament will remain the same, the same scoring system, theme and so on.

    In closing, this next year is going to be huge. I am always looking for ways to improve, so any constructive feedback or ideas are appreciated. Keep an eye out on the forums for further information about next year’s event. Thanks again to all that participated and congratulations to our winners for this year: Kevin Drury (Overall Champion), Rex Cullor (Best General), Shannon Dickens (Best Sportsman) and Keith Hoffman (Best Painted). I hope everyone has a great year and we see you back for another great event!

    Battle for Stones River Aftermath

    I know I have been slacking on updates the last couple of weeks, but I do have a good excuse. This past weekend was the 4th annual Battle for Stones River here in Murfreesboro, TN. We had a full event with 52 players fighting it out over tables filled great terrain. I managed to take a bunch of photos early in the day but I got busier as the day went on. We had a ton of great painted armies and also a great selection of 40K armies including a beautifully painted Tau army and even an old school 2nd edition Necron army.

    In the end, our local long time Dark Eldar player walked away with the win scoring the maximum amount of points possible each round. Best painted went to an awesome Imperial Guard army that not only had an amazing paint job, but it was also full of amazing conversions as well.

    Next year we are hoping to be able to expand the event to add even more players since we sold out a month in advance. Also next years event has been approved for the Games Workshop GT circuit so the winner will receive a ticket to the championship that will be held in our backyard, Memphis, TN.

    Before I get to the photos, I want to thank everyone who helped out at the event. Josh, Keith, Jeremy, Jake, Ken, Travis, Patrick, Susan, everyone else who helped, and the event organizer Jason. And another big thanks to our sponsors / partners in crime Grand Adventures, Scott and The Hammercast, and Allstate Insurance for donating the pizzas.
